Our journey – Part 1: Where it all began.
Uploaded:
Welcome to our first blog post! With our first several blog posts we will take you with us on a journey from Rotterdam to the South of France! Where did Source (see: About Project Source) start, how did our project develop and what made us end up in two tiny villages above Ax-Les-Thermes in the Ariège? That’s what we will share with you.
Our journey started 6 years ago in Rotterdam. Esmee was studying Econometrics and working for the Rotterdam Climate Agreement on the topic of sustainable consumption; Florence was studying Political Philosophy and working on education innovation for the university of Rotterdam; and Sarah had here own project to tackle the problem of food waste in Rotterdam, especially in the harbour of Rotterdam.
Esmee and Sarah paths crossed end of 2019 when they collaborated in the context of the Rotterdam Climate Agreement with a shared aim of reducing food waste in the city. There was an instant connection and it felt like we had already known each other for a long time. It was a similar feeling when Esmee met Florence when they became colleagues working on education innovation at the Erasmus university.
On Esmee’s 22nd birthday the year after was the first night the three of us came together. We enjoyed a good glass of wine and played petanque. Who could have thought we would be doing the same 5 years later in a tiny mountain village in the South of France!
That evening was the beginning of a lot more evenings we spent together. We used to get together with a group of friends in Vreewijk at Sarah’s house, where we hung out, mediated and often spoke about living more community like in a place closer to nature. The three of us connected over this similar vision for how we wanted to live our lives. A way of living in connection with each other and our surroundings, while also co-creating value for those who connected to our ideas.
And as to where that was supposed to happen, that was something Sarah had already been dreaming of since she was a little girl: the South of France, specifically the Montségur area. That dream became a shared dream and eventually in February 2022 the three of us, together with a friend, booked our first holiday to the Ariège region. We felt ready to discover if that area could indeed feel like home.
In the next blog post, you can read more about our first experience together in the area of Montségur!
